A widely known and promoted short-term goal EU has set is about reducing its emissions to 20% below 1990 levels by 2020. To do so, standardization is an important element especially considering the vast number of diverse systems and sectors involved to realize such a goal. The sheer complexity of bringing all these actors to a convergent point where they can successfully interact with each other, makes imperative that a common ground exists. As much so as when it comes to a relatively young sector such as the data centre industry.
The GEYSER project contributes to the ongoing energy sustainability efforts within the data centre sector by developing tools and business models that support the integration of data centres to smart grids and smart cities, going beyond isolated, state-of-the-art solutions. The project’s consortium, recognizing the significance of standards and best practices, ensures that standardizing the project results towards the project sustainability. Given the project’s scope, standardization bodies and initiatives related to the Smart Energy, Smart Grid, the Future Internet and Data Centres are targeted. As some members of the Consortium are already active in standardization bodies, GEYSER exploits the full opportunity of standardizing results, which are relevant to the scope of specific working groups. In order to maximize the impact of the project results within the standardization community, GEYSER primarily targets standardization activities in the context of the Smart City Cluster Collaboration and in which GEYSER has a strong participation.
The Smart City Cluster Collaboration
The Smart City Cluster Collaboration was established on January 2014 among eight EU-funded projects dealing with energy efficiency in urban Data Centres, namely:
The Cluster aims at defining common to all projects metrics to estimate the energy consumption and efficiency, as well as the environmental and economic impact of energy management in the pilot data centres. Moreover, the cluster aims at defining a coherent methodology for measuring the proposed metrics.
Through our project’s participation to the Smart City Cluster Collaboration we are engaging in defining and detailing metrics and indicators to be further considered by standardization bodies. In particular, the cluster is in liaison with IEC Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1/SC 39/ WG 1 “Resource Efficient Data Centres”, providing input on metrics related to data centres energy sustainability and renewable energy integration.
