Session at EU Sustainable Energy Week 2016

Green IT Amsterdam and Be Great are organizing a session at the EU Sustainable Energy Week 2016 in Brussels. The session on on the 15th of June is dedicated to Green IT, smart green urban datacenters, the energy chain of the internet. We aim is to raise awareness within a wide audience of European policymakers, urban planners, media and industry representatives both on the opportunities to green the internet further and on the technology initiatives the industry is taking to make this possible.

Subject: URBAN DATA CENTRES SUPPORTING LOCAL, SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS

The aim of the session The Internet energy chain: from smart urban datacenters to sustainable users behavior is twofold; on one hand it is to raise awareness amongst city planners, policy makers, IT and energy companies as well as web users, on the actual energetic and environmental impact of the ICT sector; and on the other hand it is to introduce solutions the sector itself is currently developing and implementing to face these challenges and to play a key role to the transition to sustainable energy.

The event, co-organised by Green IT Amsterdam (NL) and Be great (BE), will be divided into two sessions of 45 minutes. Each session will explore a part of the internet chain, aiming to raise awareness on how to reduce energy consumption, showcase opportunities, technology development and better practices in web user behaviours.

Person that are interested to join us in this exciting workshop in Brussels, you can register with this link. Please note that there is a limited capacity.

GEYSER at Green IT Amsterdam Participant Meeting - 8 June 2015, Amsterdam, NL

On June 8, Green IT Amsterdam held its first biannual participant meeting of this year. Special tribute is to be paid to GEYSER, being one the projects supporting Green IT Amsterdam to its mission of scouting, evaluating, and validating innovative IT solutions for increased energy efficiency and decreased carbon emissions. Attendance was open only to Green IT Amsterdam consortium participants and, as such, possible only by invitation. Nevertheless, the consortium's wide network consists of more than 40 leading organizations on sustainable IT infrastructures in sectors spanning IT, engineering, and energy.  24 February 2015 - GEYSER consortium members on tour!

Last week, on February 19, Jaak Vlasveld of Green IT Amsterdam, was invited to speak at the Open Europe conference on Open Data for an Open Society, at Riga, Latvia. The event was organized by the Latvian state as part of their EU presidency agenda. Jaak's presentation, available here focused on how the convergence of ICT and energy infrastructures is being facilitated by the use of open data. Naturally, GEYSER had a prominent place with the project's optimization engine first prototype relying on open data for weather and energy prices forecasting.
Next month will also see representatives of the project's consortium participating at two renowned data centre industry events: the Data Centre World to be held on 11-12 March, at London, UK and the DCD CeBIT on 16-20 March at Hannover, Germany.
In particular, Vasiliki Georgiadou, has been invited at the DCW to provide an update on the project's progress and first results in her talk on how urban data centres can go beyond energy efficiency towards local, sustainable energy systems; Vasiliki will also participate in a panel discussion on how cooling improvements can actually make this happen, reflecting some of the optimization strategies already explored within the project.
On the other hand, Maikel Bouricius will be talking at DCD CeBIT about how Amsterdam has been transformed to a so-called Green Data Port outlining past, present and future relevant initiatives and steps undertaken towards achieving and sustaining that role. GEYSER will also be highlighted as one of such initiatives.
We hope to see you there!
In any case, more updates and opportunities to meet members of the consortium will for sure appear within the coming months; so stay tuned!
